I have spoken to missionaries who relay prayers from other countries for us believers here in the U.S. and a frequent prayer is that God would allow us to suffer persecution. There is something about the fellowship of suffering that strengthens our faith with God and one another - something shared, something deeper than this world has to offer, something given by God I think to help us rub against the rough darkness of this world in order to see the light of God more clearly. In v7 Paul says "Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith." Satan desires that persecution and distress remove us from God, I think that would be the case if we relied only in this world for our security. Paul sums it up nicely in v13 "May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones. Jesus help me rest in that hope today. Amen.
