Romans 11

Scripture

Romans 11:1-36

Observations

· God has not rejected the Jewish people, for Paul himself is a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin
· God has not rejected those that he foreknew before time
· For when Elijah thought that everyone was gone but him, God reminded him that He had reserved 7,000 Jews who worshipped him alone
· At the present time there is also a remnant of Jews that God has chosen by his grace
· If God had chosen because of something else it would be works and not grace
· Israel as a whole worked hard to obtain it, but only the elect received it. The others had hard hearts
· Paul then quotes Deut 29:4 & Isa 29:10 that scriptures speak of how many would not see
· He then quotes Ps 69:22-23 and that David also saw the upcoming blindness off many of the Jews
· It isn’t that Israel has stumbled or been hardened so far that they can’t recover
· But because they rejected the Messiah the door has been open to the Gentiles and hopefully that will make Israel jealous and they too will come
· Their loss has resulted in riches for the Gentiles, just think about how blessed they will be if they come by grace as well
· Paul hopes that in part by going to the Gentiles the Jews will be envious and some of them also will be saved
· For a season their hearts being hardened is resulting in the Gentiles being reconciled, It will be even better if they too would turn from death to life
· If the Jews become holy, how much more will everyone else
· Paul now turns to an illustration
· The Jews are like branches that have been broken off so that other branches (the Gentiles) can be grafted in to God
· The Gentiles need to be careful not to judge and boast about their response over the Jews because the root itself is Jewish
· The branches were broken off because of unbelief, and those that are grafted in are because they responded in faith to God’s grace
· The gentiles need to stay humble, remembering that if they start trying doing it on their own pride they too can be broken off
· God is kind to those with faith and stern with those who will not believe. It is important that we continue in faith or else God’s kindness could turn to sternness and our branch be broken off
· Remember that if God can graft the Gentiles in who did not know him, how much better he can graft Israel in since they do know of him
· Paul reveals a mystery revealed to him by Jesus, that in part the Jews hearts have been hardened until the full amount of Gentiles have responded to Jesus by faith.
· In the end, all those who are truly Israel will be saved just as God promised in the scriptures
· In the short term, they are enemies of the gospel so the Gentiles might respond
· But in the long run, God will fulfill his promises to the elect Jews just as he promised the patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob)
· For if God promises or calls you, it cannot be changed
· All men and women naturally become disobedient, and in this God can offer mercy to them all
· Paul ends this section by quoting Isa 40:13 & Job 41:11 which speak to the fact that God’s mind and ways cannot be understood by mankind.
· It is all for God’s glory

Application

· I need to constantly thank God for choosing to extend his grace to me and letting me be part of His eternal inheritance
· I need to remember to serve in humility without being impressed with myself for I am God’s because he chose to graft me in, not because I did something to deserve it
· I can rely on God’s promise 100% of the time
· My purpose is to glorify God

Prayer

Father,
Thank you for extending your grace to me and choosing to open the eyes of my Jewish father. Thank you for letting me enjoy your kindness rather than live in the midst of your sternness. Help me continue to keep a humble and contrite heart that I might faithfully serve you for your glory. In Jesus Name I Pray. AMEN

This passage is such a great example to me - namely that there is no one beyond the grasp and grace of God. I need to ask myself regularly -Who are the people that I may disdain secretly in my heart? It is most likely those people that I need to approach, get to know and love, and allow the grace of God to be displayed towards.......through me. Okay, time to do some homework.
