Trinity Church sponsors three ministries in Brazil:

Our Supported Work With the Deaf Community

Trinity Church supports ministry to the deaf and children, with one American worker and one Brazilian colleague.

After years of working with the deaf community in Petrolina, Brazil, we saw a dream realized when a church and school for the deaf and their families was completed. Weekly, our supported missionaries are involved in a variety of ministries: facilitating prayer and Bible study groups, teaching, coordinating an evangelistic outreach team, leading a deaf choir, and coaching a drama team.

One of our missionaries has a love of sports and the outdoors, which led to a camping ministry for the deaf. Both our missionaries coordinate the deaf camp, oversee recreation, act as counselors, and serve as general servants during camps for both children and the deaf.

One of our missionaries has completed a teaching degree, a plus in designing curriculum and teaching children's programs in the church. Both our missionaries have together written an AWANA-type program which is used by several churches.

Prayer points:

  • For the Christian deaf, many of whom suffer great persecution from family, society, and friends at school.
  • For openings to work with new families with deaf relatives.
  • For effectiveness of evangelistic outreach.

Church-Planting in the Amazon Area

Since 1967, the Kallins have ministered along the Amazon River in Brazil near the borders of Colombia and Peru, starting churches and training leaders among the Ticuna Indians and Brazilian forest people who live along the Amazon River.

In this jungle area, there are no roads between towns. Travel is by boat or small planes equipped with pontoons for water landing. As jungle missionaries, John and Sylvia wear many "hats": preacher, plumber, architect, administrator, bricklayer, Bible teacher, carpenter, counselor, mechanic, teacher, translator, tutor, nurse.

Presently their "home base" is the Baptist Hospital in Santo Antonio do Ica where they work with five churches plus the Baptist Hospital. Besides teaching, preaching, and medical help, duties include overseeing hospital expansion and maintenance, maintaining boats used to reach preaching points along the river, and dealing with all emergencies from falling trees or failed electricity.

Additionally, they are involved in challenging ministry along the river. At the town of Betania where there are over 800 baptized believers among the Ticuna Indians, they are starting a Bible Institute to train pastors and teachers.

Prayer points:

  • For strength and health as they juggle many responsibilities.
  • For leadership development in the churches along the river.
  • For outreach into areas which have not been reached with the gospel.

Church-Planting in Aracati

The Kettlewells' ministry goal in Brazil is to establish new churches and disciple people so the church can flourish autonomously.

Early in 1997 they moved to Aracati (pronounced "ah-rockah-CHEE"), in Northeast Brazil, where the temperature is similar to the state of Arizona. It is a diked city of 50,000 at the mouth of the world's largest dry river, the Jaguaribe. There, they began a new church in the home of a Brazilian couple, Moises and Salete. By mid-1998, they had maxed out their seating space. Imagine fitting a class of 70 children on your front porch!

In 1999 they bought land and began construction of a new building, which was ready for occupancy in mid-2000. They plan to build on a tutor room to help the children with their schooling needs.

In December 2001, the congregation was blessed with a new Brazilian pastor: Pastor Genilson and his wife moved in just before Christmas.

The people in this part of Brazil travel mostly by donkey or bicycle. The average wage is $80/month.

Bill's love of evangelism and discipleship, coupled with skills like construction, are augmented by Dorothy's love of music and her skill in teaching children.

Prayer points:

  • For outreach into the community surrounding their new church building.
  • For spiritual growth of new Christians.
