21 Revelation

Revelation 21:1-27

  • John now sees (I saw) what Isaiah had prophesied long ago—a new heaven and a new earth for the first earth and first heaven has passed away in 20:11 and now that the sea had given up its dead there was no longer any sea
  • John sees the Holy City, the new Jerusalem coming down from the Father prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband
  • John hears (loud voice from the throne) “God’s dwelling place now among his people” and all the covenant promises in Lev 26:11-12, Ezek 37:26-27, 2 Cor 6:16, etc. have come to their final fulfillment
  • The old order of things has passed away and there will be no more death, mourning, crying or pain
  • John hears (from the one seated on the throne) “I’m making everything new!” and he is to write down these trustworthy and true words:
    • it is done
    • I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End
    • To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the water of life
    • Those who are victorious will inherit all of this and I will be their God and they will be my children
    • Those are unbelieving and do wrong experience a second death (first is physical death) and are consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur
  • John hears (from one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls) “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb” and the Spirit shows him the Holy City, Jerusalem and John describes the bride/city as:
    • Shining the glory of God like jewels shine with brilliance
    • The bride/city has 12 gates named after the 12 tribes and 12 foundations named after the 12 apostles of the Lamb
    • The bride/city is beautifully re-built (Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed in 70 AD) with pure gold and precious stones
  • The bride/city does not have a temple because the Father and Jesus are its temple and they provide light and the nations will walk by its light
  • The kings of the earth will bring their splendor to it and the glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it
  • The gates will never have to shut at night because there will be no night
  • Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

  • After seeing what happens to those whose names are not written in the Lamb’s book of life in chapter 20 and seeing what’s in store for the bride—those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life, I am incredibly grateful and motivated to be victorious as well as to proclaim salvation to those who will experience the second death if they do not believe in Jesus
  • How amazing that someday I/we will be in God’s presence and experiencing his glory and that I am included as a part of God’s covenant people that he cut through his Son Jesus on the cross.  This is my eternal future and I need to see and hear everyday what John saw and heard to renew my mind/heart that clings to such petty stuff that this first earth encumbers me with

Father, holy and awesome are you God of all creation and Lord Jesus, worthy are you to receive all glory and honor.  I am in awe that there will be a day when the Church will be prepared as a beautiful and brilliant bride and will come down from the Father to be united with her husband.  Father, will you bring your bride to complete unity and purity even now as we prepare for our future wedding supper.  May we keep this ultimate view in mind when tempted to split hair with one another over meaningless things or when we’re apathetic to very meaningful things.  Hallelujah—we praise you and long for the day when we will dwell together in the new heavens and earth!  Amen
