What I like:
Because Jesus isn't with us physically, we have access to the advocate (spirit).
Even though there was sadness at Jesus's passing, there is joy in the resurrection.
Even though there are trials, Jesus has already won the battle.
What I find difficult:
Jesus makes some promises that are hard: We will be scattered. We will be killed.
What the passage says about people:
It's difficult for us to accept God and his ways even when faced with overwhelming evidence (Jesus walking the earth doing miracles).
The disciples scattered in Jesus' time of need.
What the passage Says about God:
God cares about us enough to give us a heads up about our potential suffering.
He provides his spirit so we can hear his voice if we are listen.
He is willing to go the extra mile to overcome our reluctance to accept him.
1. We shouldn't expect a peaceful existence - we are in enemy territory.
2. Even when we don't have physical peace, we can have joy.
3. I need to remember that not all of Jesus's promises are things that we would naturally seek, but the should be sought.
4. Even the 12 fell short, but Jesus restored them.
Lord, help be to see your purpose in the difficulties that arise. Help me to make sure any offense I give is because of you and not me, and restore me when I fall short of this ideal.
