1 Thessalonians 5

1 Thessalonians 5

Observations -1

- Jesus will return like a thief in the night
- The day this happens should not be a surprise to Christians
- We belong to the light and do not belong to the darkness
- Remain humble putting on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet
- We have received salvation through Jesus so we should encourage one another and build each other up
- Honor those who care for us and hold them in high regard
- Warn the idle and disruptive, encourage and help people who need it and be patient
- Rejoice always and pray continually and give thanks to God in all circumstances
- Don’t reject prophecies but test them and hold onto what is good
- God will sanctify me so I will be kept blameless when Jesus comes

Observations -2

- Verses 1-11 talk about the Day of the Lord’s Coming and the comfort and challenge of it depending on who you are
- Verses 12-22 talk about how we should conduct ourselves
- Verses 23-28 are closing statements with statements about sanctification
- Sanctification is the process in which God uses make me holy or set apart for Him
- It’s through this process that God makes me more into the image of Jesus so that people will see a reflection of Him
- God is faithful and will complete the work he has begun

- Sanctification is often not an easy process
- God will use all of my life circumstances to work more of Himself in me
- I think of the phrase “less of me and more of You”
- Lately the Lord has been talking to me about the circumcision of the heart and I know he is removing the selfishness and pride
- I have to be willing to acknowledge those things in me and submit them to Jesus and His process

Lord I need You. Sometimes this is hard but I know in the long run I am better for it. I don’t want those things in my heart. I surrender to You and I trust You. I look back at all You have done in me and I stand in awe of who You are. Thank you Jesus. I love You. Amen.

I saw v19 and began to think about ways that we can put out the Spirit's fire
1. Treating prophecies with contempt. So I need to ask myself if I am taking God's Word seriously and comparing it to my life.
2.Test everything. God's promises hold true regarding my future, my finances, my work, my family, my church and I need to test them in order to realize God's promises.
3.Hold on to the good. If it is good, embrace it - not halfheartedly but completely. This made me think of how easy it is to have a purposeful conversation get muddied when I begin thinking about how I can impress that person with my wit or cynicism, or looks, or efforts. I need to keep it pure.
4. I will most likely avoid evil if I continue putting aside my pedestal and putting God's agenda, His good agenda first.
