1 John 4

Jim Asselin

1 John 4:1-21

  • John tells us some things about the Spirit
  • Do not believe every spirit
  • Test the spirits to see if they are from God because many false prophets have       gone out into the world
  • You can recognize the Spirit of God in that it acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh
  • The spirit of the antichrist does not acknowledge Jesus is from God
  • The spirit of the antichrist is coming and is already in the world
  • God who is in you is greater than he who is in the world
  • Whoever knows God listens to us
  • The spirit of truth is set on the things of God, and the spirit of falsehood is set on the things of the world
  • John says this about Love 1. That we should love one another 2. Love comes from God 3. If we love, we are born of God and know God 4. Whoever does not love does not know God because God is love 5. God showed His love by sending His only Son that we might live through Him 6. Love was enacted by God, not by us, chiefly in that He sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins 7. We ought to love others in response to what God did for us 8. John mentions that no one has seen God but if we love one another, God lives in us and is made complete in us
  • We know that we are God’s because we rely on His love and acknowledge and testify that Jesus is the Son of God
  • God is love, whoever lives in God lives in love
  • Love is made complete and gives us confidence on the day of judgment in that we will not fear, perfect love drives out fear
  • Fear has to do with punishment

Fear is the enemy of love in my life. Fear keeps me focused on what I will lose.  Loving people takes time – I might lose time. Love means pursuing God’s agenda – I might not get my way that I have strived for.  Love means enjoying the present – what if the future does not work out?  Love means giving – but what if I lose money, time, leisure, etc? In verse 7 I am reminded that love comes from God, the one who controls and has dominion over time and resources - oh, and He has given those things to me as well. Why then should I fear? Love has conquered already. Why would he not allow love to conquer fear in all of my life? He actually has, and I need to remind myself of this daily when fear rears its ugly head so that I can love more completely.

There is nothing good I have that has not been given by you, it has all originated from you, and all for your plan and purpose. You give and you take away. Whom shall I fear? What shall I fear? Help me to recognize competing voices and spirits. Instill in me your confidence, peace and love, and allow your love to drive out insecurity and fear for your sake.  I want everything I stand for and own to be yours. In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
