1 Corinthians 5:1-13

1 Corinthians 5:1-13

  • Paul has been told that there is someone in the church fellowship that is sleeping with his father’s wife (probably a stepmother)
  • They should mourn over this sim rather than being prideful in their acceptance of it
  • This person who is sinning like this should be removed from the church fellowship
  • Paul, though not there, has judged this man as one who needs to change
  • Paul has asked God to remove His blessing from this man that the enemy may have his way with the life of this man.
  • So hopefully the man will repent and found to be in Christ Jesus when he stands in judgement before Christ
  • Their boasting of having grace in this instance is not good
  • If they allow unrepentant sin linger in the church it could lead to many others falling back into the old ways before Christ
  • They are to strive to be new in Christ and set apart from the world
  • Jesus was sacrificed to put away sin, so we shouldn’t encourage it
  • He had written previously that those in the church should not associate with unrepentant sinners
  • He was not talking about those outside the church who sin
  • But he was talking about those who claim to follow Jesus, and yet continue in sin that the know is wrong and refuse to try and change
  • Christians are not to judge those outside the church, but we do judge unrepentant sin inside the church
  • The man must be refused fellowship until he repents

It is important to note that Paul is talking about unrepentant sin - that is sin that someone knows is wrong but refuses to even try and change. He says that in the case of unrepentant sin, Christians are not to tolerate it under the terms of grace, but rather challenge the person to not take Christ’s sacrifice for granted and repent. If they don’t repent, then they are not acting like a Christ follower and we should break fellowship with them. Not in anger or disgust but in hopes that the broken fellowship will lead to their repentance. Of course this means that I must take sin in my own life seriously. Though I am under grace, and God understands the process, I must be careful to stop trying and just accept the sin in my life.

Father, forgive me for not taking sin more seriously and letting it take a strong hold in my life. Continue to give me strength to fight the temptations in my life and grow in holiness. Help me find victory as I grow in Christ. AMEN
